1776

Verse 1

We lit the sky in twenty-six, two-hundred-fifty years of pride
We raised a glass to liberty, with the bitter truth we tried to hide
The fireworks were deafening, to drown out all the shouting crowds
Red, white, and blue across the smoke, but shadows lingered in the clouds
The trumpets played, the banners waved, we smiled and played the part
But the morning after July 4th, we woke up with a heavy heart

Chorus

Oh, 1776, is this what you envisioned?
A house divided on the brink, paralyzed by our division
We threw the tea into the sea, but now we're sinking in the bay
The 250th came and went, and we let the fabric fray
Yeah, we passed the grand milestone, but the spirit came undone
Tell me, 1776, what have we become?

Verse 2

July gave way to August heat, and all the promises unwound
The parchment sits in guarded glass, but the words are losing ground
We traded in our brotherhood for anger on a glowing screen
The loudest voices take the stage, tearing at the fading seams
Just weeks out from the jubilee, the cracks began to show
A grand parade of history, with nowhere left to go

Bridge

They signed their names in summer sweat, pledged their honor and their lives
Now we just point our heavy blame, sharpening our modern knives
If Washington could cross the ice to see the nation of today
Would he even disembark, or turn the boats the other way?
We celebrated freedom, but we're prisoners of our pride
Watching the republic unravel from the inside.

Outro

1776.
A ringing bell with a deepening crack.
We threw the party of the century,
But we don't know how to get it back.
1776...
We're coming undone.
1776.
